How are payments made with a standard EFTPS enrollment?
With a standard EFTPS enrollment, you access EFTPS directly by the Internet or telephone. The system will prompt you to provide your payment information and update your tax records at the IRS. You are sending instructions on when your funds should be debited from your bank account. The IRS does not have access to your checking account.
Your instructions must be received by EFTPS by 8 p.m. Eastern Time at least one calendar day before your payment is due. You will use your TIN (EIN or SSN) and PIN to initiate each payment. If you use the Internet, in addition to your TIN and PIN, you will also use your Internet Password (received during the enrollment process) to initiate each payment. With any EFTPS payment methods, you will receive an EFT Acknowledgment Number for your permanent records.
Once you are enrolled in EFTPS, you can use the Internet or phone interchangeably.
What is EFTPS-Through a Financial Institution?
This payment option (available to business taxpayers only) will require you to make arrangements with your financial institution to initiate your tax payments to EFTPS. Based on your financial institution's reporting deadlines, you will initiate your tax payment, and your financial institution will in turn debit your bank account and send the payment electronically to EFTPS. Once your payment is received, your IRS tax records will be updated. Each financial institution has unique products, procedures and charges for this service. Prior to selecting this payment option, please check with your financial institution to make sure they offer the service and that you are eligible to use it.
You will receive a PIN and can obtain an Internet Password when you select this payment option on the online enrollment form. You will need the TIN, PIN and Internet Password to check your payment history on the Internet. You cannot make or cancel any payments on-line if you select this payment option. Your financial institution will not have access to EFTPS EFT Acknowledgement Numbers.
It is important to obtain all information from your financial institution regarding availability, costs, deadlines, and liability before deciding to use this payment method.
